What is happening to remove.bg?
According to remove.bg's own FAQ, the standalone remove.bg website will be discontinued on December 1, 2026, and the background removal tool is moving into Canva. For casual users who just visited remove.bg, dropped a photo, and downloaded the result, that standalone workflow goes away.
Two things are worth remembering about how remove.bg worked:
- Free downloads were previews. Without paying, downloads were limited to low resolution; full-resolution results required credits or a subscription.
- Images were processed on their servers. Every photo you removed a background from was uploaded first.
What to do before December 1, 2026
- Spend or save what matters: if you hold unused remove.bg credits, use them on your most important images before the standalone site closes, and download the full-resolution files.
- Keep your originals: make sure you still have the original photos behind any results you care about, so you can re-process them anywhere.
- Pick your next tool now: bookmark an alternative (like this one) so your workflow does not break on deadline day.
How this alternative replaces remove.bg
| What you did on remove.bg | How it works here |
|---|---|
| Upload a photo to their servers | Drop the photo here — it is processed on your own device and never uploaded |
| Download a low-resolution preview for free | Download the full original resolution, free |
| Buy credits for full-size downloads | No credits exist here — every download is full-size |
| Create an account to manage credits | No account at all — open the page and work |
| Process one image at a time | Queue a batch, then download individually or as one ZIP |
Honest note: this tool uses an open-source AI model (U²-Net) that runs on your device. On photos with a clear subject it is excellent; on extremely fine detail like flyaway hair it can be a step behind remove.bg's server-side models. In exchange, it is free without limits, private by design, and your downloads are always full resolution.
